Stockings Stuffed with Kindness and Ready for Delivery
Each year, BPS101 partners with the Batavia United Way for the Batavia United Way’s Holiday Adopt-A-FamilyProgram. Thanks to the generosity of Batavians, 108 families were adopted last year. The families are selected by school counselors and those most in touch with the needs and situations of our school families. Batavia United Way matches sponsors to adopt them, coordinates wish lists, collects the donations and prepares them for families to pick up in time for the holidays.
The Batavia Woman’s Club adds another special touch, so every child receives his or her own stocking filled with treats. Last year, more than 260 individual stockings were packed and gifted to local families!
It is a large undertaking and several BPS101 students and organizations helped this year. Batavia High School students in the Vocational Transition Program formed an assembly line and packed stockings. The BHS Key Club helped prepare the packing sacks by labeling with family information, and the BHS National Honor Society provided transit services of collected items from the Rosalie Jones Administration Center to Batavia High School and then to Grace McWayne Elementary School for distribution. The Grace McWayne Elementary School Student Council conducted a penny war and, in one week, raised $579 to pack 30 stockings (15 girls/15 boys)!

Several Scouts also helped with stockings for the Holiday Adopt-A-Family Program, including Grace McWayne Elementary School Girl Scout Troop #717.

“These groups are all to be commended for helping with the community-wide project. The Batavia Woman’s Club appreciates all of the contributions,” said Nan Phillips, president of the Batavia Woman’s Club.
