Student Spotlight: Kathryn Sauer
Grace McWayne second-grade student Kathryn Sauer recently competed in the Illinois Special Olympics regionals in Palatine, Ill., and won GOLD in both the rhythmic gymnastics hoop and ribbon events! Winning gold qualifies Kathryn for the June 7-9 Illinois Special Olympics state competition in each event.

How long have you been training for Special Olympics?
This is my third year competing in Special Olympics, but my first year competing in rhythmic gymnastics.
How did you get involved in rhythmic gymnastics?
In the past, I’ve done track. My mom thought gymnastics would be something I would like because it’s like dancing—and I LOVE dancing.
What do you like better, using hoop or ribbon apparatus in your rhythmic gymnastic performances?
I like the ribbon best.
What was it like to win two gold medals at the competition in Palatine, Ill.?
It was very exciting winning two gold medals. It was fun having everyone clap and cheer for me.
Are you going to compete in the state games? If so, how do you feel about that?
I am going to compete in the state games in June. I am really excited. I got to go to state last year for the tennis ball toss. Everyone is really nice.
What’s your favorite thing about being a part of Special Olympics?
My favorite thing about Special Olympics is hearing everyone cheer me on.
